Frequently Asked Questions about Pet Food Packaging

NNZ Canada offers FIBC bulk bags, Q-bag formstable bulk bags, multi-wall paper bags, co-extruded poly bags, and pallet solutions for pet food packaging. Format and barrier selection depend on product formulation, volume, and shelf-life requirements. Contact us to discuss your needs.

  • Which packaging format is suitable for dry pet food?

The right format depends on volume and distribution stage. 4-loop Power-Lift® bulk bags suit dry kibble and pellets in large volumes for production and co-packer distribution. Q-bag formstable bulk bags are used where consistent pallet density in the warehouse is a priority. For smaller quantities, multi-wall open mouth paper bags with moisture and grease resistance are specifically suited to dry pet food. Woven poly bags are suitable for smaller distribution packs for co-packers. NNZ Canada offers these formats for pet food packaging.

  • Which barrier is best for protecting pet food from moisture, light, and oxygen?

Pet food with a high fat content is sensitive to oxidation during storage. Multi-wall open mouth paper bags with a PE-coated layer resist moisture and grease, making them suited to dry kibble and similar products. For products requiring stronger barrier performance, high-barrier multi-layer poly bags can provide additional protection against moisture, oxygen, and light. Bulk bags with liners are available in PE for standard moisture protection, PE/Al for a combined moisture and light barrier, and PE/EVOH for a high oxygen barrier. The appropriate barrier depends on the product composition, shelf-life target, and storage conditions.

  • Are NNZ Canada’s bulk bags for pet food suitable for food contact applications?

Bulk bags and Q-bags from NNZ Canada are tested according to ISO 21898, a structural performance standard covering load capacity and safety factors of 5:1 or 6:1. ISO 21898 is not a food-safety certification in itself. For pet food applications, food-contact suitable versions are available at food contact levels 2 to 4, including bags produced under Hygiene Level 1 conditions. For animal feed-specific requirements, the applicable standard depends on your product and regulatory context.

  • What customisation and print options are available for pet food packaging?

4-loop bulk bags can be printed on one or two sides in up to four colours, including brand name, product variant, and handling information. Paper bags can be printed on side and end panels for product identification in pallet loads. Contact NNZ Canada to discuss the print specification that fits your branding and distribution requirements.

  • How can bulk packaging make pet food logistics more efficient?

Large FIBC bulk bags consolidate pet food into fewer packaging units, reducing individual handling steps between production, storage, and co-packing. Q-bag formstable bulk bags maintain a square footprint after filling, helping make efficient use of pallet and warehouse space. Empty bulk bags fold flat and take up relatively little storage space when not in use. Pallet netting or pallet wrap can be used to secure palletised loads during transport.

  • Which pet food packaging is suitable for automated filling lines?

For bulk volumes, 4-loop Power-Lift® bulk bags with a filling spout can be configured for pneumatic or auger filling systems. Q-bag formstable bulk bags are also available with filling-spout configurations where a stable shape after filling is important. For smaller pet food packs, poly bags and poly rollstock are available in mono, duplex, and co-extruded structures for automated packaging lines. The appropriate format depends on pack size, line configuration, product flow, and barrier requirements.
